The Catherine F. Sutherland Community Service Scholarship Award
The Catherine F. Sutherland Community Service Scholarship Award is awarded to that student who has demonstrated through service and commitment the importance and understanding of“giving back”; that student who has devoted her time and service for the benefit of others.Catherine F. Sutherland was an exemplary, loyal member of the West Orange African Heritage Organization for over 15 years. She was considered the “only grown-up in the room” because she was always impartial, knowledgeable, intuitive, kind-hearted and filled with empathy. She never asked “what do you want me to do?” She performed without being asked, she saw avoid, and she filled it. As a member of the executive board, she held the position of treasurer for several terms. In that position as Treasurer, we always knew that the books were handled with profession, monthly reports were impeccable, and disbursements were on time. Cathy was also the Co-chair of the Nominating Committee and the Coordinator of Inventory. She was the “glue” that held together the sanctity of our mission. She was an extraordinary woman! We will continue to celebrate her LIFE, live by her example and protect her legacy.
